Representation of Kadita as Indonesian Heroine in Mobile Legends Multiplayer Online Battle Arena

Abstract


Abstract— Mobile Legends Bang Bang is starting to gain popularity and players among Indonesian youth. In this mobile game, there are two characters which were inspired by Indonesian legend: Gatot Kaca and Kadita. Kadita is one of the female characters, which players could choose to represent himself/ herself in this game. This character is a representation of Nyai Roro Kidul, a prominent female character found in Javanese and Sundanese folklore.
This study explores the recognition of Indonesian female traits on this character, by Indonesian youth players. To find the traits, there was an online urvey to pinpoint visual elements of Indonesian traits, as detected by players. Then a focus group discussion to gain more insights. The outcome was analyzed using semiotic in lenses of interpretation method.
In conclusion, the players have detected Indonesian women traits on the character. In the semiotic lens, Kadita’s appearance has transmitted visual codes and detected by Indonesian players as Indonesian mythical persona.
