Abstract

This study aims to provide an overview of the environmental conditions at the Cahaya Kencana Landfill by using earthworms as bioindicators in polluted land areas. The research was conducted in three zones of the landfill: the active zone, the buffer zone, and the administrative zone. Earthworm samples were collected within 1 × 1 meter plots. The observed parameters included soil pH and soil moisture at the sampling locations where earthworms were found. The results showed that all three zones exhibited relatively neutral pH levels, with the highest pH recorded in the active zone at 7.4. Soil moisture varied among zones, with the highest moisture level recorded in the administrative zone at 80% and the lowest in the active zone at 20%. The abundance of earthworms was low, with only one individual found in both the buffer and administrative zones. The low earthworm density across all zones indicates that soil pH and moisture alone are insufficient to determine soil quality at the Cahaya Kencana Landfill. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the low density of earthworms reflects a decline in soil quality due to waste disposal activities using open dumping methods.
