Abstract

This study aims to map the initial needs in the development of E-Comic Life as a digital educational medium for the prevention of self-harm and the improvement of literacy among vocational high school (SMK) students. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative analysis. Quantitative data were obtained through a Likert-scale questionnaire administered to 272 students, while qualitative data were collected through open-ended questions from students and 15 teachers. The survey results indicate that 39.3% of students have experienced emotional pressure that led to thoughts of self-harm, and 73.5% reported a need for educational media to help manage emotions. In addition, 69.5% of students stated that visual media such as digital comics are easier to understand and increase reading motivation. Qualitative findings reinforce these results, with teachers emphasizing the need for engaging visual media, clear counseling standard operating procedures (SOPs), and systematic educational programs to prevent risky behaviors. Teachers also noted that digital comics are highly suited to the characteristics of Generation Z students and can help explain emotional issues in a simple and relevant manner. Overall, the findings indicate that the development of E-Comic Life is strongly needed as an engaging, easily accessible literacy medium that supports self-harm prevention efforts in vocational high school settings. These identified needs provide a strong foundation for the design and development stages in subsequent research.
