Kediri is a place that has potential for batik although it is not as popular as batik in other places. Batik has developed in Kediri since 1994 until now. Initially, the batik that developed was written batik. In 2012, a new type of batik emerged, namely Jumputan batik and Sasirangan batik. This study aims to identify and analyze the history of batik in Indonesia, and the development of the batik industry in Kediri. The research uses the historical method, which has heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography stages. Batik has been known since prehistoric times known as primitive batik. During the Kingdom era, the development of batik can be seen from archaeological findings in the form of a statue of Ganesha Boro in the upgrading temple area of Blitar. Batik experienced rapid development during the Sultanate of Yogyakarta and the Surakarta/Solo Sunanate. Until merchants emerged who gave birth to batik industry centers such as Lawean, Kauman Solo batik village and in other areas. The pattern of Kediri batik before 1994 was Central Java, especially Yogyakarta and Solo batik. Around 1994, batik circulating in Kediri was increasingly diverse, there were batik from Solo, Yogyakarta, Madura, Cirebon and Pekalongan. The batik industry in Kediri first appeared in 1994, namely the Suminar batik industry. In its dynamics until 2013, more and more batik industries were born. Until 2013 there were six batik industries in Kediri Regency and two batik industries in Kediri City which produced various motifs, one of which was contemporary motifs.
