PENGGUNAAN KATA 「青」AO (BIRU) PADA IDIOM BERBAHASA JEPANG YANG MEMILIKI MAKNA HIJAU

This research analyzes the use of the word "ao/blue" to refer to the color green in Japanese. The color green itself is called "midori" in Japanese. This research was carried out because many students had difficulty understanding the use of the word "ao" in Japanese vocabulary which refers to the color green. The formulation of the problem in this research is why the word "ao" is often used to denote the color green and what vocabulary that uses the word "ao" to denote the color green. The method used in this research is literature study and qualitative descriptive. The results of this research show that the reason "ao" is often used to refer to the color green is because it is related to Japanese history regarding the color. Apart from indicating the color green, the word "ao" also shows several different meanings. From the list of 27 vocabulary words or idioms that use "ao", the meanings of “ao” is found which indicates Youth: 3 (three) words; Inexperienced/too young: 2 (two) words; Despair: 1 (one) word; Pale face : 3 (three) words; Age full of dreams/youth: 1 (one) word; State of lack of enthusiasm: 1 (one) word; Vegetables and fruit: 8 (eight) words; Animals: 2 (two) words; and “ao” which is used in daily life: 6 (six) words.
