Japanese Cultural Identity in the Translation of Novel Memoirs of Geisha by Arthur Golden

Abstract


Abstract. This research on translation discuss the influence of foreignization ideology in translation of Memoirs of Geisha, a historical fiction novel by American author Arthur Golden. There are many material cultural terms found in the novel such as terms of address, musical instruments, performing arts, food, clothes, and sports. They can found in the words Kimono, Geisha, Kabuki, and so on. This study applied a descriptive qualitative approach since it emphasized in describing the influence of foreignization ideology in the text. This study reveals that foreignization can present an illustration of cultural identity with positive impression and image while maintaining source language in its target language. The implication of the using of foreignization is to make the readers of the novel can enjoy the foreignness belongs to the source language of the novel including its source culture. The fact raises the assumption that Memoir of Geisha maintain the cultural reference of the source text. Consequently, the reader will know something he or she does not know before. In other words, the reader become aware of the cross cultural understanding.
