Analysis of Lambe Turah Captions :The Role of Maxims in Pragmatics
Abstract
Abstract--Writing a caption in social media is an important aspect in way to communicate with other. Throught captions the reader can understand what is been tought by the writer. The caption not only explain about the picture, but sometimes it can be a clue for reader to understand about the picture. Talking about the captions, Lambe Turah as the first gossip account in instagram which has more 6 million followers did not apply the function of the caption. The admin of Lambe Turah sometimes put picture without any explanation of caption. On the contrary, when they wrote the captions not based on the picture. This research gained 50 captions from instagram of Lambe Turah account. The result shown that 32 % of the 50 captions were categorized as violation of maxim Quantity, captions violated maxim of quality were 30% of the 50 captions data taken, 14% came from violation of maxim Relevance, and 24% were identified as violation of maxim Manner. These violation of maxim pragmatics were found and caused by writer’s captions who were not objective and informative in presenting news in writing and leading public opinion with the writer's personal assumptions.
