The Analysis of Optimistic Values in English Textbooks of Junior High School in Indonesia
Abstract
Abstract—This study aims to analyze the optimistic values contained in English textbooks reviewed from the learning themes and to describe which optimistic values frequently appear on the textbooks of Junior High Schools in South Jakarta. The method of this study was descriptive content analysis. The data were collected based on the units of analysis, identification, coding, and classification. The procedure of data analysis and interpretation adapted the steps proposed by Myring. The findings demonstrated that the dominating optimistic value in the four themes was curiousity (71%), followed by discipline (16%), creativity (11%), and courage (7%). The findings of the present study can be utilized as a reference for the further textbook development and/or analysis in wider contexts. This study also recommends the teachers and researchers to explore the other humanistic values contained in the other textbooks anchored by the theory of character education so that the results may mediate the development of character education in the EFL teaching and learning context.
