POLITENESS PRINCIPLES AND MORAL VALUES IN NOTTING HILL FILM BY RICHARD CURTIS

Abstract


The objectives of this research are to know the types of politeness principles and moral values in Notting Hill film by Richard Curtis. Besides, this research is aimed to know the most type frequency in the utterances. The theories in this research are proposed by Geoffrey Leech for politeness principles, and Linda and Eyre for moral values. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research was taken from the script of the movie retrieved from the Internet Movie Script Database (IMSDb). The data is categorized into politeness principles and moral values. Then, it is analyzed to find the possible reasons of applying politeness principles and of recognizing moral values that underpinned the utterances. The results of this research are: (1) The most frequent type of politeness principles was tact maxim that occurred 27 times (25.00%). (2) The most frequent type of moral values was honesty which occurred 36 times (34.95%). So, based on the results of this research, the writer hopes that people who are interested in pragmatics fields are challenged to give deeper analysis on the topic of politeness and do a better research.
