Analysis Of Plot And Character Development In E.B. White's Novels Charlotte's Web And Stuart Little
Abstract
The aim of this study is to analyze the plot and character development in E.B. White’s novels Charlotte’s Web (1952) and Stuart Little (1945), as well as their implications for education. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this study finds that the plot structure of Charlotte’s Web consists of: (1) Exposition: 9%, (2) Complication: 36%, (3) Climax: 14%, (4) Anticlimax: 18%, and (5) Resolution: 23%. Meanwhile, the plot structure of Stuart Little is as follows: (1) Exposition: 13%, (2) Complication: 54%, (3) Climax: 7%, (4) Anticlimax: 13%, and (5) Resolution: 13%.Character development in Charlotte’s Web includes: (1) Caring: 32%, (2) Honesty: 14%, (3) Fairness: 4%, (4) Responsibility: 27%, and (5) Self-Respect: 23%. In Stuart Little, character development consists of: (1) Caring: 33%, (2) Honesty: 6%, (3) Fairness: 14%, (4) Responsibility: 27%, and (5) Self-Respect: 20%.The educational implications suggest that both novels can be used as learning tools to instill moral values, help children understand the importance of cooperation, responsibility, and resilience in facing challenges. The findings of this study confirm that children's literature can serve as an effective medium for shaping character and essential life skills, making it relevant within the educational curriculum.
